Compare the end of part 1 of this with Nightmare of Eden.... the difference is first time director Peter Grimwade.
Actual characters, direction that's better than just phoning it in, incidental music that 'rocks' and a cast that is taking it seriously... this is easily the best DW since City of Death.

ReplyDeleteThe first of the late Peter Grimwade's four DW serials which he directed in the early 80's. He had a knack of taking otherwise pedestrian scripts and both coaxing performances from the cast and photography and editing that made the show stand out. The biology in this is slightly hokey but it's high concept SF and it serves the story so I can let it go. The guest cast includes some familiar faces (George Baker) and some DW regulars (Alan Rowe, James Bree). The incidental music score by Paddy Kingsland is an early triumph in new producer John Nathan Turner's first series. This story introduces Mathew Waterhouse as Adric. Grimwade was a very talented director who died of leukemia in 1990. Like Douglas Camfield, had he lived he would surely have been much more famous these days.
