160 Aliens of London/World War Three

Watched 28-May

We watched the BluRay edition.

The plot is an attempt to invert the UFO invasion trope (at least a little) but it comes across as simplistic.

In particular the behaviour of the flat dwellers' having 'welcome aliens' parties looks kinda odd, same with the farting aliens and the 'just doing me job' bits with the guards.

Dramatically this creates an atmosphere of meta SF which undermines the serious bits in the second episode.

Billed at the time as one of several 'change of gear'/relaunch eps this looks great and feels ambitious but it seems to fall flat for mine.

159 The Unquiet Dead

Watched 25-May

On upscaled Bluray.

This is a genre based ep. Horror ghosty stuff with a historical presentation of a famous person.

It's actually pretty fluffy and there's a thematic problem with the way the Gelth are portrayed as mindless alien invaders. Why does the Doctor initially accept their sobful 'help us' story? Why do they turn so abjectly toward 'thanks sucker, now we're taking over'? No reason for this deception then savage turn is offered. None is pursued. The story is incomplete without this.

Nonetheless Callow is good as Dickens. The character could have been cynical or shallow. But the way he reacts to the revelation of the Gelth is consistent with his 19th century worldview and shows the character developing with the story. Good stuff....

That the Doctor is the one who suggests and uses the seance to contact the Gelth is just wrong. My wish is that the end of that scene did not exist. (Particularly after the word games thing of Gwyneth getting all that modern London stuff out of Rose's mind.)

Gwyneth is the story. This is a sign the show has grown from the space monsters and 'Silver Nemesis' style cartoon silliness of the (not so recent) past.

First mention of the Big Bad Wolf meme....

158 The End of the World

Watched 24-May

On Bluray...

This episode sets the new tone for the series to come.

First mentions of the time war and the 'last of the Time Lords'.

There are some bits of this which are epic. Other bits are factually strange. Others are mystifying and perplexing... and surprising.

The spacey future is not perfect. The lives of the servicey drone people is clearly marked out as second class (at least). The 'knobs' (e.g. Cassandra) are awful and get their comeuppance.

I remember saying out loud when this first aired... This is a new, different series. Because it is.

DW has always changed. That's how it stays fresh and interesting.

Keep going.

157 Rose

Watched 21-May-2020

From now on it's BluRays all the way but these 2000's eps are upscaled from SD.

Well after 9 years or 16 years (depends on how you want to count it) the lightbulb did start working again.

Things I noticed when I watched this again for the first time in a few years.
  • How much the actual trad DW plot is a sideline to the introduce the characters 'action'.
  • How Chris as the Doctor veers wildly from deadly serious to whimsical, sometimes within the same scene!!..
  • How bogan trash Rose's Mum is...
  • How Mickey is a fool
  • How Rose is so meticulously characterised by the writer. The role of companion is very clearly the highest priority of the writer.  The identification is heightened. The subservience and incidentalist aspect is suppressed.
Thankyou DW Marathon blog...

Doctor Who - Series 1

There's an old gag about DW fans. It goes like this. How many DW fans does it take to change a broken light bulb? Answer is none. They just wait for it to come back on again. And guess what? After 16 years (!) off the air, it bloody did!!!!! This new DW has a decent budget and some great stories. The pace is restored (and improved perhaps). The writers and directors are very skilled and have some regard both for the quality of the show they make and the distant past memories of the old fans. But this is not the old Dr Who. This Doctor is the last of the Time Lords, the companion role has a character and a bit more to do than say "What's that, Doctor? and "Why, Doctor?" and the episodes are 45 minutes with most containing a whole story. Massively popular in the UK in 2005, this is the first dvd in a series that will run and run.

It's not very good.

In the words of one critic.....

Zygon: When Being You Just Isn’t Enough (...) is almost certainly the only Zygon-based soft-porn film ever to have been made.

To be clear there are knobs, rooting (rude bits and oral (also rude)), gratuitous nudity and tits. The story is (such as it is) is unclear and boring.

Which makes it definitely off the end zone and definitely not Doctor Who Marathon material.

The Story of Dr Who (2003)

The Story of Doctor Who was a television documentary which aired on 30 December 2003 as part of the fortieth anniversary celebration of Doctor Who. It was introduced by Jon Culshaw

Nothing too embarrassing but frank and realistic. This one has a slightly lighthearted tinge to it.

It has problems.

The Pitch of Fear, The Web of Caves & The Kidnappers (1999)

These are on the 1A DVD.

Originally these were part of the the Doctor Who Night on BBC2 on 13-Nov 1999.

https://tardis.fandom.com/wiki/Doctor_Who_Night_(1999)

Doctor Who Night was a night of themed programmes that began with Introduction to the Night with Tom Baker as a future Doctor, broadcast from 8:55pm-12:30am on 13 November 1999 on BBC Two. It was produced by BBC Manchester.

A special Dalek BBC Two ident was used throughout the evening between the programmes, as well as promos for the upcoming repeat of Spearhead from Space, the Doctor Who website and Doctor Who merchandise.

Satirical and sharply observed vignettes which gently skewer the spirit of DW. ("Doktor...!!")

These serve as a fun reminder that DW was actually rather damn good.

Adventures in Space and Time (1999)

Watched 5-May

A documentary on the history of Doctor Who (1963) featuring new interviews with cast and crew, transmitted as part of "Doctor Who Night" on BBC2 (13-Nov-1999).

With Peter Jones as narrator (yes the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy himself in his last ever professional job before he passed away) this sounds kind of clinical and lacks some of the artificial optimism about DW's legacy and advocacy for its reinstatement. This was made in 1999 when the chance of a new series was zero (apparently).

There are bits of frank interviews with Verity, David Maloney, Jim Acheson and Tom Baker. Nothing too embarrassing but frank and realistic.

This is transparently an artifice to link together a collection of all the clips which were in the library at the time of production.

There is linking intro from Jamie Fraser and Victoria Debbie but this looks hasty and incomplete. There are one take interviews with Jan Vincent Rudski and Damian Shanahan and some others.

This video was put together for the original Ice Warriors VHS release. When Lost in TIme was first released as a DVD set about 5 years later the clips were presented individually.

Due to its age it is somewhat out of date. 20 years of subsequent recoveries have made this redundant and curious.

The Few Doctors (1998)

Watched 3-May

An UnEarthly Image of the Return of the Revenge of the Seeds of the War Games of Doom.

BBC Executives are gathered to come up with a new concept for Doctor Who on television. After the Children's and Drama departments are excluded the project falls in the hands of the BBC Sports department. The classic science fiction series is changed into a sports grudge match between all the television and movie Doctors against the classic monsters - Cybermen, Daleks, etc.

This premiered at Panopticon 1997. It's daffy and good value. It takes DW literacy to get all the jokes (when Doc 7 exits the Tardis 'loo', Doc 6 launches custard pies at him and the shot imitates the scene in the Telemovie) but it's funny even if you don't.

Damn good fun... when you're in the right mood.

156 Doctor Who (The Movie)

Watched 1-May

Can this be ranked? Of course it can...

We watched the 2016 imported UK BluRay.

There are some minor changes to the TV version... extra narration over the first scene and some extra and alternate edits.

This is well made and formulaic. It is unlike real Doctor Who in that there is a remarkable lack of "scariness". There is horror: the eye abuse, the fingernail, the ghost snake attack, the machine gun deaths.

But the thing that is **very** missing is the creeping dread of corridors and being chased by slow lumbering cybers or autons or yetis and the feeling of being trapped in the ark with no air supply while surrounded by wirrns or being stalked by Mr Sin in the dark and so on.

The tension in this plot is limited to the timey countdown and being chased by the evil gangster/Master guy. This is ordinary and less than completely compelling.

Paul McGann owns the role of Doctor Who. There are some 'piloty' moments which you might expect to disappear if the series went ahead. Daphne starts out well but goes kinda simpleton gushy by the end of the movie. Yee is ok but is obviously a youth identification character (which has not aged well in the quarter century since this was made.)

Eric gives an effective Hollywood bad guy performance.

Philip Segal is a minor DW hero for the persistence he maintained to get this made. The bad ratings result in the US killed a consequent series. The ok ratings in the UK were unable to sway the producers because of the way this movie was created.

The worst thing about this movie is this.
No matter what the quality or popularity of the film the contractual conditions that were conceded to allow this movie to be made ironically prevented the series return to UK production until rights expired in 2003 (I think or at least suspect). America and DW do not mix.

------------
From Quickflix

This one is getting harder to love. With every passing year it looks less like the modern series and clearly has next to nothing to do with the classic series. When it first appeared it was like a miracle. In the 80's DW had gone downhill and hit some horrible lows. The worst low of all came in 1990 when it grew clear that the series was not coming back in the new decade. The lack of definite announcement made the experience awful and frustrating as well as tragic and heart wrenching. It took six long years for this effort to appear. It was a strange mix of co-production money from US TV interests, Universal, BBC Worldwide and filmed in Vancouver Canada. Incidentally only the second DW episode to be shot wholly on film. Produced by a DW fan come Hollywood producer, Philip David Segal this made for TV movie was hoped to be the pilot for a series but poor US ratings put paid to that notion straight away. At the time I thought it was a step up, now it looks more like a step sideways and an abortive step at that.

Downtime (1995)

Watched 3-May

Is it really Doctor Who? It features several recurring characters from DW so yes it qualifies. But it does not rank.

Direction by classic series royalty Chris Barry is probably the biggest factor. The video look detracts a little from the finish. There's good use of the Brig and the writing works through some family problems which are both realistic, grounded and dramatic. Other performances are all quite good, even Pete Silverleef as Christopher Rice. University of East Anglia is the main location and many students were recruited through the school paper as extras.

The story is burdened by symbolism and metaphysical issues: ghosts, automatic writing, psychic impressions, ya da ya da ya. I'm not sure it all makes sense but the 'go with it' vibe is irresistable.

This is actually quite good. This has the biggest budget of any DW fan generated spinoff. And it shows. Lots of locations, effects and some action.

Shakedown Return of the Sontarans (1995)

Watched 2-May

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shakedown:_Return_of_the_Sontarans

We watched a VHS capture compressed to Xvid.

Is it really Doctor Who? It features several recurring characters from DW so yes it qualifies.

The budget is obviously low. The costumes are kinda cheap looking. The whole film is shot aboard the HMS Belfast, an old battleship moored in the Thames as a museum.

The spaceship modelwork is ok without being fantastic.

The plot is turgid (predictable and cliched) yet lively and exciting. performances are variable. Jan Chappell is quite good and solid as lead hero. Brian Croucher as token wise guy is less believable. Toby Aspin as the (slightly?) heroic Sontaran commander is good value but Tom Finnis as the 'thick' Sontaran Vorn is letting the side down. Carol Ann Ford and Sophie give effective notes to their characters. Michael Wisher seems a little underused here (Strangely his accent veers a bit wildly from American to Irish.)

Direction is a bit ropey from time to time (especially with stunt shots) but there are some good ideas and imaginative use of the location. I'm not sure the idea of the Solar Sailing 'yacht' ex-commercial cruiser quite matches the very heavy steel bulkheads of the inside of a WW2 battleship but.

Worst thing in it is the blatant recycling of classic DW dialogue ("The human female" "the cyberman line" and stuff about "glorious deaths".) It's like Terrance Dicks was making the dialogue out of shredded, remaindered copies of Target books.

The production is entertaining and better than I remembered it last time I saws it. Otherwise it's probably too unadventurous and a bit predictable. The Sontaran commander turned possible hero ending is pleasing but the crew are cliched.

I would have cast Sophie, Jan and Carol Ann as the Sontarans and have 'em write their own femmo dialogue. It would have been much more interesting and experimental.
