AKA 100,000 BC, The Tribe of Gum
Good first episode of course. We've seen it plenty of times of course so it's familiar.
The Cave of Skulls (ep2) is also quite good. The Forest of Fear (ep3) and The Firemaker (ep4) are a bit slower but they are not as unendurable as most people make them out to be.
I think 4 stars for ep 1 and 3 stars for ep2-4 are good ratings.

Episode 1- a solid 4.5-5 out of 5
ReplyDeleteThe rest- maybe a 1.5-2 out of 4, although I think I'm being gentle there... Eps 2-4 were just plain dull. As it seemed a bit like a character driven story, the characters were just..- I don't think the cavemen characterisations have stood the harsh and cruel test of time. Also the characters of the TARDIS- i mean the Ships- passengers are not fully developed yet.

ReplyDeleteThis dvd contains the first 4 episodes of DW. The first episode is a masterpiece of studio bound TV drama. It has lost little of the impact it had in 1963 (or 1965 if you were watching in Australia). The other 3 episodes are a little less exciting. They centre around the 2 teachers, Ian and Barbara's first trip in the TARDIS to stone age earth where two cavemen are struggling for dominance over their tribe and the use of fire. Little of the DW hallmarks (pace, humour, eccentric characters, scary monsters) are present. Watch this for the first ep then skip straight to disc 2 is my tip.
